What is a Doula?

The word "Doula" comes from the Greek and means "Woman's Servant". Today we use the word Doula to refer to women who have experience with labor and birth. They are also professionally trained to provide emotional, educational, and physical support to the family, before, during and after the baby is born. Woman-to-woman support in childbirth is not a new concept—it has always been the norm in traditional cultures all around the world. In America, the role of the professional doula is becoming better understood, and as a result more and more pregnant women and their partners are hiring doulas to assist them in childbirth or to offer support after they have brought the baby home from the hospital.

My name is Christy Parish and I am a Doula and also a proud Military Spouse. We are in the process of moving from Germany to the Woodbridge, Virginia area in September of 2008.

I will be available for Labor Support at the local hospitals, birthing centers, or in your home. I am also available to provide Prenatal and Postpartum Support for you and your family. I am a mother of two and have EMT and Medical Assistant training with 7 years of experience. I also have 1 year experience working in Labor and

Delivery at the Army Hospital in Germany as a Med Tech. As a Tech, I provided the support of a Doula and much more. I also worked as a DONA trained doula at a hospital in the states for 7 months before returning to Germany. Once back Germany, I worked as a private Doula for the families in the KMC. In this total time period, I have attended over 70 births. I have 3 years experience in home daycare and have training in breastfeeding, childcare, and child development. As a Doula, I do not preform medical duties. Please feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to assisting the parents of Northern Virginia with my knowledge, skills, and heart to help them achieve a safe and satisfying birth experience!

*Having a doula to assit during childbirth is highly reccomended by healthcare professionals, mothers, fathers or birth partners, no matter how much support you may have. Enlisting the services of a doula would also be a great recommendation for mother's who's spouses or partners are deployed, or if you are a single parent.
